The Truth about HDTV Televisions and Their Technology

There are many different types of HDTVs on the market today. The truth is that any of them are perfect. Sometimes a buyer may feel overwhelmed with the many choices that may be available in a store not to mention, the many options that are available online. Every single one of these technologies is different that the others and every single one of them has its own pros and cons. What type of HDTV set is best for you depends greatly on what you want to use your television for. For example, gamers tend to prefer LCD screens while movie lovers prefer Plasma screens or DLP projectors.

Plasma screens used to dominate the HDTV market some time ago and are still being manufactured by a limited quantity of brands. This technology is similar to Cathode Ray Tube displays in some aspects including the deep colors, high contrast and excellent projection of black colors. Plasma sets in the early years used to have short life spans. After some years in the market they improved in terms of reliability and lifespan. These screens are perfect to watch movies and recorded media. On the downside they require more energy to operate and even they are still prone to image burn in.

LCDs are very light compared to Plasmas. They put on less weight on the electric bill. When it comes to image quality, colors on LCD sets are very bright and vivid. However, when it comes to black colors they lack the solidness of Plasmas blacks. Although, in recent times manufacturers have worked a lot to create models that can display dark blacks to help enhance the overall quality of the image. Some sets have a slow refresh rate that leads to image ghosting on fast moving scenes. Overall, LCD sets have a longer lifespan and have a lower price than Plasma if you are looking for smaller sets. Be sure to read reviews since the performance of these high definition Tvs varies from model to model.

There is another HDTV technology that goes by the name of DLP. DLPs are very cost effective compared to the other ones. Usually, this technology is used to manufacture big rear projectors. When it comes to image quality, this technology has a considerably lower image quality than others. There have been complaints about a rainbow effect that not all people but some, are able to detect on images that are being created by a DLP projector. Some people have reported feeling sick after watching television on these.

A somehow funny fact is that even if these technologies are very advanced, they can not match the contrast and colors of CRT, the oldest television technology to date. CRT is still used in some regular televisions. It was used in the creation of HDTV sets but, due to their heavy weigh and the fact that they take a lot of room made manufacturers change their mind about this technology.
