2Mb Promise is Merely Touching the Tip of the Iceberg, Says Report
The government’s ‘2Mb broadband for all’ vision should take in its ambit rural areas as well if it is to be identified as a truly welfare-oriented scheme, according to a new report.
The report, aptly titled ‘Mind the Gap - Digital England, a rural perspective’, published by the Commission for Rural Communities, says that concrete measures should be undertaken to ensure that high-speed broadband is accessible to rural communities. One of the report’s recommendations includes providing ample support to around 40 community-based broadband schemes existing under the able organisation of The Independent Networks Co-operative Association.
The CRC also warns that the hype created by Digital Britain’s ‘2Mb broadband for all’ targetone that it claims to attain in three years’ timemay force people into believing that the greatest digital dream is to be realized, when a 2Mb speed is just a basic facility for most broadband applications now. Meanwhile the ‘broadband tax‘ suggested by the Digital Britain Reporta tax that would finance revamping of broadband networks across the UKhas been shrouded amid a cloud of controversy. The CRC report puts a big question mark on whether the levying will indeed provide enough finances for the government to support such an ambitious undertaking.
